Abstract

This report details the results of New South Associates' Phase I Archaeological Survey of the Intersection of SR 53, Etowah River Road, and Thompson Road in Dawson County, Georgia for Heath & Lineback Engineers, Inc. The project area is located about 3.5 miles southeast of Dawsonville, and the combined total length of the project corridor is approximately 3,723 feet (0.71 mi). This project was divided into three phases: background research, fieldwork, and analysis. Background research revealed that the project area had a high potential for archaeological sites. Four previously recorded sites were identified within a mile of the project corridor. One site is located nearby, while another site is being avoided and is not within the APE. As a result of this survey, one previously recorded site, whose National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) status is unknown, was identified. A site is a nineteenth-century cemetery whose boundary falls close to the project area but will be avoided during construction. Two isolated finds were also discovered during the survey, both of which are recommended as not eligible for the NRHP.
