A Phase I cultural resources survey of the proposed Tired Creek Reservoir in Grady County, Georgia was conducted to locate and identify cultural resources within the project area and assess resource significance based on National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria (36 CFR Part 60.4). The project area consists of a 389-hectare (960-acre) proposed reservoir. The project area is located approximately 4.6 km northwest of the intersection of US Highway 84 and SR 112, northwest of Cairo, Georgia. Eighteen archeological sites and two isolated finds were recorded during the survey; additionally, three previously recorded sites were revisited. Prehistoric components belonging to the Archaic period, Weeden Island phase, Late Weeden Island phase, Early to Middle Woodland period, Woodland/Mississippian period, and unknown prehistoric period were noted. Six historic archeological sites were identified during the survey: four late 19' to early 20'h century logging tramlines, one late 19' to early 20th century low-head dam, and one early 19th to middle 20th century historic road (Hawthorne Trail). No historic structures were recorded. The NRHP eligibility status of four sites (9GR60, 9GR76, 9GR77, and 9GR82) could not be determined during the survey. Nine sites and the two isolated finds are recommended ineligible for the NRHP. Eight sites are recommended potentially eligible for the NRHP. A program of Phase II testing is recommended for these sites.
