Abstract

Phase II archeological testing was conducted on sites 9GR59, 9GR78, 9GR80, 9GR84, 9GR86, 9GR87, and 9GR89 from February 4 through April 4, 2008. Additional shovel tests were also placed on sites 9GR59, 9GR60, 9GR76, 9GR77, and 9GR82 to further delineate site boundaries in order to make NRHP recommendations. Based on the results of the additional shovel testing, 9GR60, 9GR76, 9GR77, and 9GR82 are recommended ineligible for the NRHP and no further work is warranted at these sites. Phase II testing at 9GR59 indicates that the site is a Late Archaic, Early Woodland, and Late Woodland short-term or seasonal camp. Site 9GR84 contains Early Archaic and Late Weeden Island components. Site 9GR86 contains Late Archaic, Early Woodland, and Mississippian components. Site 9GR87 contains an Early Woodland component. Sites 9GR59, 9GR84, 9GR86, and 9GR87 are recommended ineligible for the NRHP on the basis of the Phase II testing results. Site 9GR78 is an Early to Late Archaic and Woodland/Mississippian camp; a deeply buried intact cultural feature was identified at this site. Late Archaic and Early Woodland site 9GR80 contains a deeply buried cultural horizon. Site 9GR89 is a multicomponent site with Late Archaic, Middle Woodland, and Late Weeden Island occupation loci. Sites 9GR78, 9GR80, and 9GR89 are recommended eligible for the NRHP based on the results of Phase II testing. As the nature of the proposed undertaking means adverse effects to these sites are unavoidable, a program of data recovery excavations under a Memorandum of Agreement is recommended at sites 9GR78, 9GR80, and 9GR89.
