Abstract

On December 13, 14 and 16, 1982, the author conducted cultural resource surveys on a total of 489 acres in Fannin County, Georgia. The surveys covered a 0.57 mile length of the proposed Tilley Bend Road with an adjacent 278 acres and a 1.3 mile length of the proposed Wilscot Creek Road (FS 82) with an additional 211 acres which included planned timber sale units in Stands 13 and 24 of Compartment 610. A non-probability survey which included pedestrian reconnaissance and subsurface testing was conducted over the project areas. one historic site and eight aboriginal sites were discovered during the survey. The historic site consists of a partially constructed log structure of recent cultural affiliation in the Tilley Bend project area. This site is considered archaeologically and historically insignificant. All aboriginal sites were located in the Wilscot Creek project area. Most of these sites consist of shallow, sparse lithic deposits subjected to moderate to heavy disturbances. However, sites GA02RO2, GA02RO4, GA02RO7, GA02SO8 and GA02SO9, located within Compartment 610, should be protected. Although these sites lie outside areas of immediate impact, protection from future disturbances should be ensured until these sites can be tested to determine archaeological significance.
