Abstract

In September 2008, Edwards-Pitman Environmental, Inc. (EPEI) conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of the proposed Horizon Parkway Park and Ride project area. The proposed project consists of the construction of a Park and Ride facility along Horizon Parkway. The proposed park and ride lot would be situated on approximately 3.1 acres of land adjacent to the existing lot in northwestern Gwinnett County. The lot would be located roughly 0.2 miles south of the Interstate (I) 985 and State Route (SR) 20/Buford Drive junction and would have approximately 400 parking spaces. Access to the lot is planned from Horizon Parkway. The goal of the survey was to locate and evaluate archaeological sites within the Area of Potential Effect (APE) of the proposed undertaking, so that potential effects to any resources identified could be evaluated in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The project was conducted under a contract with the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority. A review of the Georgia Archaeological Site Files at the University of Georgia in Athens showed that seven previously identified archaeological sites are located within a one mile radius of the project area; none are in the APE. No archaeological sites were identified during the survey. Based on the results of the survey, EPEI recommends that no further archaeological work be undertaken at this location; clearance for construction is recommended.
