Abstract

The Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests recently completed a survey of 34 acres for a proposed commercial harvest on the Oconee Ranger District in Jasper County. The area of potential effect (APE) for the present project consists of those areas for which ground-disturbing activities associated with the proposed timber harvest could potentially occur. This includes the timber sale area itself, as well as Forest Road 1023B for its entire length. All four sites previously recorded along Forest Road 1023B (9JA239, 9JA240, 9JA241, 9JA242) were revisited as part of this project and all were relocated. Sites 9JA239, 9JA241, and 9JA242 were found to be accurately recorded and the present investigator agrees with the original recommendation of not eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Site 9JA240 was found to be recorded in the wrong location, and as a result of additional work at the site it is now recommended to be eligible for inclusion on the NRHP. A previously unrecorded site, 9JA476, was also documented within the timber sale area as a result of information provided to the author by Forest Service personnel. This site is an historic rock pile site that is considered to be not eligible for the NRHP. The project as presently designed will have no effect on site 9JA240 and it is recommended that the proposed timber sale be allowed to proceed as planned with the stipulation that no ground disturbing activities occur outside the 30 ft wide corridor of Forest Service Road 1023B where it crosses through site 9JA240.
