Abstract

The project as originally proposed would improve the intersection of State Route 81 and Lake Dow Road by re-aligning Lake Dow Road approximately 1215-ft. east of the current intersection along State Route 81, add left and right turn lanes on all approaches and add a traffic signal to control the intersection. The project would begin at MP 12.58 and end at MP 12.78 on State Route 81 and would begin at MP 0.00 and end at MP 0.24 on Lake Dow Road. Existing right-of-way of State Route 81 varies from 100-ft. to 120-ft. The existing right-of-way for Lake Dow Road varies from 60-ft. to 150-ft. There would be no right-of-way required. This project was surveyed by Pamela Johnson in December of 2008. At that time, no archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential effect. Since that time, the project has changed as follows: The proposed project will improve the intersection of SR 81 and Lake Dow Road by realigning Lake Dow Road approximately 615 feet east of the current intersection. The project will begin at MP 12.78 and end at MP 12.97 on SR 81 and will begin at MP 0.00 and end at MP 0.15 on Lake Dow Road. Permanent and temporary easements will be required. An archeological survey consistent with these project revisions was performed within the project corridor. An archeological survey (Level I) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. By agreement, since no archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential effect, no signed concurrence form the State Historic Preservation Officer is required. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
