Abstract

The proposed project would consist of grading, maintenance of driveway/street/road tie-ins, removing and disposing of excavated material (gravel, asphalt, concrete, etc.) to include compaction of sub-grade, and resurfacing on SR 50 in Quitman and Randolph Counties, Georgia. The proposed project on SR 50 would begin at a point approximately 1360 feet east of CR 84 (in Quitman County) then continue southeasterly to an end point just east of CS 601/Lumpkin Street (in Randolph County). In addition, Type B & D curb cut ramps would be installed at 6 intersection locations along the project route. All proposed construction would be restricted to within the SR 50 existing right-of-way, primarily within the existing roadbed; no required right-of-way or easements are needed for project implementation. An archaeological survey (Level I) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. By agreement, because no archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential effect, no signed concurrence from the State Historic Preservation Office is required. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
