Abstract

An intensive archaeological resources survey was carried out for the proposed South Covington Substation and Transmission Line in Newton County, Georgia. The project was carried out in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act by personnel qualified under 36 CFR Part 61. The corridor surveyed is approximately 5.1 km (3.17 mi) long and 23 meters (75 ft) wide. The project corridor begins east of Lower River Road at an existing transmission line right-of-way, and extends east over Yellow River, Dried Indian Creek, and Flat Shoals Road. The corridor continues northeast around a land application facility where it takes a sharp turn east and ends at the proposed substation location. The proposed substation is approximately 1.67 hectares (4.13 acres) and lies just west of State Route 36. This survey was conducted for Georgia Transmission Corp. No archaeological finds were identified during fieldwork. The proposed project will not affect significant archaeological resources. No additional archaeological resources investigations are recommended.
