Abstract

An intensive archaeological resources survey was carried out for the proposed North Burton US Highway 76 Substation in Rabun County, Georgia. The project was carried out in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act by personnel qualified under 36 CFR Part 61. The total area surveyed included approximately 2.83 hectares (7 acres) and also encompasses part of a power line corridor. The project area lies south of US Route 76, north of Timpson Creek, and west of Timpson Cove. No previously identified historic or prehistoric cultural resources were located within the vicinity of the project tract through background research at the State Site Files database, maintained by the Department of Anthropology, University of Georgia. This survey was conducted for Jordan, Jones, and Goulding, Inc. One site (9RA250) was encountered during fieldwork. Site 9RA250 is an historic remnant of the Hiawassee & Clayton Road. Brockington and Associates recommends this site ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).The proposed project will not affect significant archaeological resources. No additional archaeological resources investigations are recommended.
