Abstract

Between 14 and 18 July2008, Brockington and Associates, Inc. conducted an intensive Phase I archaeological resources survey of proposed improvements and widening to Hillcrest Parkway in Dublin, Laurens County, Georgia. This investigation was carried out for the Georgia Department of Transportation, through a subcontract with Thomas & Hutton Engineering Co., in partial fulfillment of guidelines established by Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, by personnel qualified under 36 CFR Part 61. The project corridor consists of a varying span 100 to 200 feet in width along and including Hillcrest Parkway (CS 987) from Industrial Boulevard/CR 493 on the south to the US 441/SR 29 intersection at the northern terminus. Background research and cultural resources survey were used to identify potentially significant resources within the project's area of potential effect (APE). Background research conducted on NAHRGIS identified no previously recorded archaeological sites within the APE for the proposed widening improvement along Hillcrest Parkway. Nine previously recorded archaeological sites are located within a 1.0 mile radius of the project corridor, but none of these archaeological resources are located within an area of direct or indirect impact for the proposed project. Therefore, there will be no effect to any previously recorded cultural resources. The archaeological resources field survey verified that much of the project corridor has been heavily disturbed by modern development. During this investigation, one isolated find (Isolate 1) was recorded. Isolated finds are generally regarded as ineligible to the NRHP. Archaeological resources clearance is recommended.
