Abstract

In July 2008, Edwards-Pitman Environmental, Inc. (EPEI) conducted an archaeological survey at the site of the proposed County Road (CR) 133-Little Sugar Creek bridge replacement, Morgan County, Georgia. The total length of the project was 0.32 miles. The goal of the survey was to locate and evaluate archaeological sites within the Area of Potential Effect (APE) of the proposed undertaking, so that potential effects to any resources identified could be evaluated in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, as amended (16 U.S.C. ยง 470). The project was conducted under a contract with Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. A review of the Georgia Archaeological Site Files at the University of Georgia in Athens showed that one previously identified archaeological site lies approximately 0.8 kilometer north of the project APE, and therefore would not be effected by the current project. One site was identified in the original APE during the field survey and is recommended as having unknown eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). After consultation between GDOT archaeologist James Pomfret, Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc., and EPEI, the proposed project was redesigned to avoid effects to this site. Since the revised project would result in no effect to the site, archaeological clearance for the proposed CR 133-Little Sugar Creek bridge replacement undertaking within the revised APE is recommended. We also recommend that measures be implemented to protect this site during construction.
