Abstract

This report describes the results of an archaeological inspection of a strip of shoreline located just north of the existing Port Services facility on the Naval Submarine Base at Kings Bay, Georgia. This tract of land includes portions of one or more archaeological sites. Over the years it has succumbed to some degree of shoreline erosion, which could potentially degrade existing resources. The main purpose of this inspection was to provide sufficient information to the Georgia State Historic Preservation Office for a determination of archaeological management for this area. Management would include whether and in what manner the archaeological sites required protection and/or maintenance. Methods employed to carry out this determination were: 1) pinpoint the location of the property relative to the archaeological sites (using a combination of Naval maps, archaeological survey/testing maps, and visual inspection), 2) examine the extent of archaeological research already conducted, 3) discover what recommendations, if any, had been made concerning archaeological preservation or management within the subject property, and 4) act on these recommendations.
