Abstract

Greenhouse Consultants Incorporated was retained by Contour Engineering to undertake a pedestrian archaeological survey and limited shovel testing of an approximately 33 acre parcel proposed for development of a Wal-Mart Supercenter on U.S. Highway 27 in Summerville, Georgia. Survey fieldwork was conducted from June 11 to 13, 2002, under direction of staff principal investigator John W. Matthews. Diane Hammonds, archaeological technician, served as field and laboratory assistant. The purpose of this survey is to determine if the proposed project parcel would affect any prehistoric or historic cultural resources or historic properties that would indicate previous human occupation. The investigation was completed to comply with state and federal (Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act) regulations and guidelines for Federal-involvement projects. An archaeological reconnaissance survey of the proposed project area was undertaken, as was excavation of a limited number shovel tests within sensitive areas of project impacts. Photographs were taken of any historic properties within the project parcel.
