Abstract

The Conasauga Ranger District (Conasauga RD) of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests is proposing to harvest timber in Chattooga County, Georgia using a commercial timber contract. Although most of the project area had previously been surveyed for heritage resource sites, there were questions regarding the accuracy of this survey. For that reason, all high probably areas within the Area of Potential Effect were resurveyed, along with any areas that had not previously been surveyed. An intensive survey of these areas covered a total of 550 acres. Sixteen previously unrecorded archaeological sites were recorded during this survey, and four previously recorded sites were relocated. Determinations of eligibility for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) were conducted for 15 of the 20 sites. Two sites were determined eligible, while 13 were found to not be eligible for the NRHP. A determination of eligibility was not made for the remaining five sites. The eligible and unevaluated sites will be protected from all ground disturbing activities during the undertaking. A 30 m (100 ft) buffer will be placed around each site and no ground disturbance will be allowed within these areas. If these protective measures are followed, it is recommended that the proposed undertaking be allowed to proceed as planned.
