Abstract

This report details the findings of a cultural resource reconnaissance of the Powertel Site # 271022A, Smithsonian South in Bibb County, Georgia. Construction of a monopole structure has been scheduled for this location. This project was conducted in order to comply with FCC regulations concerning potential environmental impact of communication related structures. The purpose of this reconnaissance was to determine if proposed construction activities would physically or visually impact cultural resources. This reconnaissance produced evidence of a sparse surface scatter of cultural material which is most likely associated with the Site. The Site is considered to be a location of extreme cultural significance and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Subsurface investigations, however, indicate that the portion of this site scheduled to be impacted by the proposed construction activities has been destroyed by cultivation. No intact cultural deposits exist within the area affected by the proposed construction activities. This project will have no adverse physical effect upon cultural resources. This project, however, does have the potential to visually impact existing area cultural resources. In consideration of the sensitive archaeological setting of the surrounding area, it is recommended that measures be implemented to mitigate visual impact to existing area resources before this project proceeds.
