Abstract

Nineteenth-century descriptive and photographic information on Overlook Mansion exists for most of the house, grounds, and outbuildings. There is, however, little information on the backyard areas adjoining the 1870 ballroom and 1858 dining room. Many of the physical attributes of that portion of the structure have been obscured or lost by construction changes. In November and December of 1979, Cultural Resource Services performed exploratory archaeological excavations in the backyard of Overlook Mansion in an attempt to fill some of these gaps in the records of this magnificent nineteenth-century Southern home. Field work was under the direction of Timothy Mistovich. He was assisted by Roy Blair, Jr. Roy S. Dickens, Jr. was principal investigator on the project.
