Abstract

The project involves the widening of Ocmulgee East Boulevard from its intersection with Emery Boulevard south to the present four-laned section at Lanier Heights The lanes would be increased to four with paving expanded from the present 24 feet to 48 feet. No additional right of way will be purchased. Because of the limited scope of the project, there was little likelihood of locating an archaeological site. The grading and consequent erosion of the right-of-way further reduced the chances of any archaeological sites within the project area. The subsurface tests at the middle drainage seem to indicate that that area is part of a residual sand deposit. The burned organic zone in Test #1 is probably a result of the original road construction. The organic lens in Test #2 is not burned and may be related to original clearing of the land in the 1800's.
