Abstract

During the summer of 2000 Fort Stewart, Georgia began experiencing a Southern Pine Beetle (SPB) (Dendroctonus frontalis) infestation. In an attempt to contain the expansion of the infested areas while still remaining in compliance with applicable cultural resources management legislation, Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Georgia State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) that allowed for reporting to occur after the work of the epidemic had passed. This report presents effects and results of the 2000 SPB infestation. A total of 12 infested areas covering 22 acres were identified as having SPBs and were evaluated for cultural resources. Four of these areas contained cultural resources, resulting in four sites being recorded (Table 1). None of the sites were recommended as eligible or potentially eligible for inclusion the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
