Abstract

An area stretching south from Kilkenny Road for a distance of approximately 300 m (1000 ft.) was examined along a north-south transect with a sequence of about 20 shovel tests spaced every 15 m (50 ft.). No cultural material was encountered in any of the shovel tests. Based on: (1) the lack of cultural material in the shovel tests, (2) the relatively great distance from a creek or other large waterway, and (3) the fact that the characteristic soil types of the areas examined are not those usually associated with coastal archaeological sites; I recommend that there be no further concern for archaeological resources within the limits of the two areas of the DNR Tract-1, Parcel 1, Bryan County, Georgia. Finally, one cautionary note should be added. A major archaeological site, the Redbird Creek Site (9Bn9), lies immediately east of the Redbird Creek Road only 7.2 km (4.5 miles) to the north of the areas investigated in Tract-1, Parcel 1 (Early Georgia Vol. 12, nos. 1 and 2, p. 2). The presence of archaeological sites along the Kilkenny River - Redbird Creek waterways argues for archaeological assessment of any development proposed for DNR properties in the vicinity.
