Abstract

Archaeological survey and background research was conducted for nine proposed fiber optic regenerator stations, seven areas in Georgia and two in Florida. The station sites were surveyed through a combination of systematic shovel testing and surface survey in areas with over 50 percent ground visibility. No National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) properties were present in the corridor; however, a single previously recorded site, (9SN79) was found to be located adjacent to Station 3. The survey resulted in the discovery of cultural materials at only two of the station sites. A single biface was recovered from the surface at Station 3; however, no additional surface or subsurface artifacts were collected. This artifact is considered to be an isolated find and is therefore recommended ineligible for the NRHP. Despite the recovery of a single isolated prehistoric artifact (a chert flake) in a shovel test, principal site deposits at Station 4 are recent in nature and not considered eligible for the NRHP. No further archaeological work is recommended for any of the station sites, and archaeological clearance for construction is recommended.
