Abstract

A Cultural Resources Survey and Site Evaluation was performed for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers fee owned lands at the margins of Walter F. George Lake, in Henry, Barbour, and Russell Counties, Alabama and Clay, Quitman, Stewart, and Chattahoochee Counties, Georgia. The survey included 23 public use areas, all fee owned shoreline, and a 50 ft wide strip bordering the lakeshore in the Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge. The survey identified 106 archaeological sites, including the relocation of 41 previously recorded sites identified during a literature search for the project. Cultural materials have been analyzed and reported, and the site data are employed in a new integration of the culture history of the region. Management recommendations regarding these sites are summarized.
