Abstract

Stream profiles and flood boundaries have been predicted for the 25 year and 100 year flood events in Greenville, Georgia. The proposed wastewater treatment and collection facilities should be located with due consideration to the natural floodway. Physical structures, electrical, and mechanical equipment must be adequately protected when located on flood prone areas. The interceptor sewers along Walnut and Kennel Creeks will probably be located within, or near, the 100 year floodway. In those areas, interceptor design will incorporate flood protection measures such as bolt-down covers, or raised manholes. Flooding is not expected along the minor tributaries to these creeks and will not impact adjacent sewer projects. Pump stations are proposed for locations on Walnut Creek and its north tributary which extends into the City. The Walnut Creek site is located between the Central of Georgia Railroad and Ga. Highway 41. Overbank flooding is not expected at this location. The north tributary site occupies part of the flood plain east of Ga. Highway 41. Specific flood protection measures and the location of the pump station will be finalized during the Step 2 design phase. The treatment plant site occupies approximately 30 acres adjacent to Kennel Creek south of Georgia Highway 18. While the location of structures and equipment remain to be determined during the preliminary design phase, it is expected that the 10.0 year flood may impact 20 to 25 percent of the site by inundation. During Step 2 a more intensive field survey will be conducted to relate site conditions: to the flood profile elevations. At that time, specific flood control techniques or protection measures will be finalized.
