Abstract

The cultural resources survey of the proposed 92 acre "footprint" of the Yazoo Wetlands Mitigation Bank in northern Meriwether County located seven prehistoric archeological sites and evaluated two historic resources. Due to previous disturbance caused by plowing and erosion, coupled with sparse artifact deposits, none of the seven prehistoric sites have good research potential. Thus they are considered to be ineligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. On the other hand, the two historic resources, the Greenville-Newnan/Central of Georgia Railroad bed and the Trammell farm/dairy buildings, are tentatively identified as eligible properties. However, restoration of the wetlands will have no foreseeable impact on these resources as they lie outside of the immediate area of potential effect. Issuing a federal permit for wetlands restoration, and implementing the restoration, will not result in any impacts to significant archeological sites or historic structures.
