Abstract

The survey area for the proposed Mountain Creek substation is an approximately 3.6 acre tract. of land on Georgia highway 34, just west of Newnan in Coweta County, Georgia (Figure 1). The proposed substation site is east of Trinity Baptist Church. Part of the substation site is planted pines and the remainder is overgrown with bushes and blackberry vines (Plates 1-3). The purpose of the archaeological survey is to locate and identify any sites which may exist and to determine whether any such sites may be eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. The small size of the survey area and the absence of a local water source make it unlikely that the spot would have been chosen for intensive aboriginal occupation. The research design includes pedestrian survey with subsurface tests as necessary. Artifacts, field notes, etc. will be maintained in the archaeology lab at Kennesaw College. The front portion of the proposed substation site (near the road) was planted pines; the back portion was overgrown with bushes and blackberry vines. Some preliminary clearing had been done in the back, allowing limited ground visibility. The area of the planted pines was more open and the ground visibility was good. Evidence of past contour plowing, now heavily eroded, was noted throughout the survey area. No artifacts indicative of aboriginal activity were found. A poured concrete slab of unknown function was found on or near the property line (Plate 4). It was at the edge of the woods on the western side of the survey area. The slab does not appear to be a grave stone since there are no markings on it nor were any indications of a cemetery noted around it. Since a church is located just west of the survey area, the woods and tall grass at the edge of the woods were carefully checked but no evidence of a cemetery were found. No prehistoric artifacts were found within the survey area of the proposed Mountain Creek substation site. A concrete slab of unknown age or function was found at the western edge of the survey area; however, it does not appear to have any historic significance. There does not appear, therefore, to be anything of National Register significance within the survey area that will be affected by the proposed construction.
