Abstract

The proposed project would widen and reconstruct the SR 34 Bypass north of Newnan, from two lanes to four lanes. The proposed project would begin approximately 600 meters (1700 feet) west of the CR 70/SR 34 Bypass then extend easterly along SR 34 Bypass to an end point at the intersection of SR 34 Bypass and SR 34. Existing right-of-way for SR 34 Bypass varies from approximately 45.7 meters (150 feet) to 121.9 meters (400 feet). A maximum of 12.1 meters (40 feet) of additional right-of-way would be required for the construction of the project. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed rights-of-way was conducted for the entire 5.39 kilometer (3.35 mile) project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
