Abstract

Julianton Plantation in McIntosh County, Georgia comprises the lower tip of the Harris Neck peninsula on the north side of Sapelo Sound. The approximately 1281 acres of the tract are bounded on the north by Delta Plantation, on the east by Shell Creek and the Little Mud River, and on all other sides by marshes or the Julianton River. The tract and roughly 2055 acres of surrounding marsh were purchased in July 2007 by Crescent Resources, LLC, which intends to develop the property into a residential and resort community. A Phase I archaeological survey was conducted at Julianton Plantation from October 2007 through February 2008, by Integrated Archaeological Services, Inc. (IAS), Bluffton, South Carolina for Crescent Resources, LLC. A systematic shovel test survey was completed over the entire study tract, except for wetlands. Survey shovel tests were spaced at 30-meter intervals and additional shovel tests at closer (10- to 15-meter) intervals were used to define the site boundaries more precisely. The survey identified 55 archaeological sites. Three of these, 9MC40 and 9MC42/57 and 9MC43, were previously known archaeological sites, while the other 52 were new discoveries. This study provides important data on prehistoric and historic settlements on the Georgia coast.
