Abstract

Limited archaeological investigations were conducted on site 9GE169 during the month of November 2003 by field archeologists with Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. The predominantly late Mississippian Lamar site was to be avoided by the construction of a subdivision road for Reynolds Plantation on Lake Oconee and SAS was hired to verify the site boundaries (Figure 1) of an earlier investigation that recommended the site eligible to the National Register of Historic Places (Espenshade and and Mitchell 1988:46). Through limited shovel testing and surface inspection SAS verified that the intact portion of the site covered an area of approximately 70 m wide and 140 m long. Pottery was found in a highly disturbed area to the southeast but that material was considered to be slope wash and lacking in context. Reynolds designed the road corridor to be placed around the habitation location so that no impact would occur. During construction, the area was monitored to insure that no damage was done to the site. Reynolds Plantation has agreed to set aside the Lamar farmstead area as a green space that will not be developed. This report has been prepared for the use of the Reynolds Plantation Planning Department and is not intended to conform to the standards of a compliance document.
