Abstract

The archeological testing described in this report defined the site boundaries of 9Le(SAS)2, as shown in Figure 1. The site contained even more material than was indicated by the original survey and its status as eligible to the National Register of Historic Places remains unchanged. Oglethorpe Power Corporation intends to reroute the proposed transmission line to the west to completely avoid the site. This will be accomplished by angling off of the original line at about 1 20 m (400 ft) north of the cypress swamp to a point about 100 m (325 ft) west of the swamp edge, then back to the original line at a point about 180 m (600 ft) south of the swamp edge. This approximate rerouting was derived after the testing had been completed and the site limits (maximum of 70 m from the swamp edge) had been determined. The proposed rerouting of the 75 ft wide right-of-way will completely avoid 9Le(SAS)2. This avoidance was confirmed in the field the day after the testing. Mr. Tate Godfrey of O.P.C. observed the survey of the new line and confirmed that the right-of-way does not intersect the site limits which were marked in the field with orange flagging tape.
