Abstract

The cultural resource survey of 400-acre tract surrounding Vogel State Park, Compartment 390, Brasstown District, Chattahoochee National Forest, was conducted December 14-17, 1983, by the author. The addendum was made in October when additional data became available on the petroglyph site. Three sites were found in the area; two were heavily disturbed prehistoric lithic scatters, while the third was a petroglyph of recent (circa 1880) age on a large sandstone boulder near the picnic areas. Because the proposed transfer of all or part of this parcel to the State of Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the sites will come under supervision and care of the State Historic Preservation Officer, who will be able to provide for the protection of the petroglyph. Campsites should not be placed adjacent to the glyph area, but it appears unlikely to have cultural significance, according to the criteria in 36 CFR 60. Thus the proposed transfer of ownership is recommended.
