Abstract

Georgia Department of Transportation and U.S. Department of the Interior Project MLP-813(l), Walker-Catoosa Counties, is the proposed relocation of existing U.S. 27 to the west from S.R. 2 on the north to a point just south of Tubb Road on the south, a distance of approximately 5.1 miles (Figure 1). The typical section for the project would be four travel lanes constructed within a 200 foot minimum right-of-way. Of three alternative routes under consideration for construction, two--Alternate A4 and Alternate AS--would traverse a portion of the extreme northwestern corner of the Chickamauga-Chattanooga National Military Park (CCNP). Right-of-way within the park would be between 300 and 400 feet depending on the construction cuts required by the severe terrain (Figure 2). Because National Park land may be required for construction of the road through a section of the park, an archaeological survey was required under the provisions of the Archaeological Resources Protection. Act of 1979. A permit for such a survey was acquired June 25, 1988.
