Abstract

A cultural resources survey was conducted by the author on 602 acres of National Forest land in the Woody and Walker Creek drainages in northern Lumpkin County north of Fort Smith (now R Ranch). Six sites were recorded including two 19th to 20th century house sites; a probable gold mine opening; stone terrace walls; a 1940s sawmill set; and a prehistoric lithic scatter. One of the house sites had two infant graves nearby which will be protected from disturbance as will the mine and most of the terrace walls. The remainder were not considered significant and no further work on them is recommended.
