Abstract

A cultural resources survey was conducted on 77 ha (190 acres) of the Phase II property acquired by Newton County, Georgia for the development of a wilderness park. Twenty archeological sites were discovered, two of which are nineteenth century mill ruins. These two sites (9Ne33 and 9Ne34) and a site containing nineteenth century structural remains (9Ne43) were components of the community of Newton Factory. There are at least five mill sites included in the wilderness park. The three nineteenth century sites are considered significant resources eligible to the National Register of Historic Places. It is recommended that the previously proposed archeological district of Newton Factory Community be expanded to include these three sites.
