Abstract

The pre-engineering survey of 1975-76, conducted by Marvin T. Smith and recorded by Edward I. Dittmar, discovered thirteen heretofore unknown archeological sites. The work of 1977, conducted by Donald L. Crusoe, added one other site for a total of fourteen. These sites are listed in Table No. 1 with their location and attributes. Except for 9FY32, found in the last phases of this investigation, no archeological sites will be impacted. In the most cost-efficient manner and in a methodology most consistent with the goals of preservation of our National heritage, the concept of pre-engineering archeological surveys has been proven to be effective. By identifying and plotting the archeological resources at the most basic point of facilities planning, additional costs that might be warranted to re-engineer a project or to effect determinations for mitigation and the subsequent costs of mitigation itself are saved. In so much as the State Archeologist stated at the pre-1977 survey conference that his office had no interest in those sites outside the project's impact area, and by the fact that 9-Fy-32 was deemed not significant by reason of non-contextual content, no site sheets or reports have been forwarded to the Office of State Archeologist other than this report.
