Abstract

The study area consists of a tract of land totaling some one hundred and sixty acres. The study area lies within the flood plain of the Coosa River, which, in this general area, consists of large bottomland fields. The study undertaken was at the level of a reconnaissance assessment. As such extensive research was not warranted, especially in the nature of archaeological investigations. Certain pertinent documentary sources were examined and interviews with archaeologists and historians familiar with the area were conducted, as was a general pedestrian field examination. This work was directed at the production of an assessment of potential cultural heritage resources within the study area and the recording of known resources. Based upon this limited research, it is the writer's conclusion that the probability of the presence of non-renewable cultural resources associated with the study area is high. The nature of these potential and known resources is described more fully hereafter. The descriptions are categorized according to the types of resources projected and known to exist.
