Abstract

In May of 2001, Southeastern Archeological Services conducted an intensive archeological survey for the proposed Gray bypass, in Jones County, Georgia. Major portions of the bypass had been surveyed before (Gresham 2000), but the original alignment went through the Clinton Historic District. Therefore, in order to avoid the district, two alternative alignments were designed to go around Clinton. The overall length of the project is about 9.7 km (6 mi), and the proposed right-of-way is 75 m (250 ft) wide. Thirteen archeological sites and 10 artifact occurrences are within the proposed bypass. Due to poor integrity as a result of cultivation and erosion, and low research potential, none of the resources are considered eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
