Abstract

In August, 2006 Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., conducted a Phase I archeological survey of a proposed 0.1 ha (0.2) ac step aeration facility and 91 m (300 ft) long discharge water line adjacent to the Mulberry River in southern Hall County. Background research showed that prehistoric archeological site 9HL402 was recorded at the project area in 1993, and that the site had been recommended as eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Our main goal was to determine if the proposed discharge line intercepted the site, and if so, could the line be moved to avoid the site. Indeed the original layout of the line did cross the eastern edge of the site. Our shovel testing showed that moving the line about 5 m to the east, to hug the existing right-ofway for SR 211, would avoid the site entirely. This information was relayed to project engineers, and the line was shifted to the east the requisite 5 m. The project as now designed will have no effect on site 9HL402, nor any other archeological site. Therefore, we recommend that the project be allowed to proceed with no further work.
