Abstract

This report presents the results of an intensive archeological survey performed by Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. in northern Paulding County, where the Georgia Transmission Corporation wishes to construct the proposed Dabbs Bridge Road 230/25/15 kV substation. The goal of the survey was to locate and evaluate any archeological resources that may be adversely affected by the construction of the substation. The survey was undertaken in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. The area of potential effect for the project consists of approximately 7.7 ha (18.93 ac). The tract is predominately pasture with a small amount of woodlands. With the exception of a narrow bluff containing rock outcrops, the ridge slope has been agriculturally terraced. A portion of the project area is contained within the floodplain of Ward Creek. Dabbs Bridge Road and Harmony Church Grove Church Road form the southern boundary of the tract. The project area was surface searched and shovel tested (with 54 tests) to locate evidence of archeological sites. Four isolated artifacts were recorded as occurrences but no archeological sites were found within the tract. The artifact occurrences are not eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Thus, we conclude that the construction of the proposed substation will have no effect to significant archeological resources and should be granted clearance to proceed.
