Abstract

On March 22, 2000 Southeastern Archeological Services conducted an intensive archeological survey for the proposed improvement and extension of Linecrest Road, which runs along DeKalb County's southern boundary. The project includes minor improvements to 1.2 km (.75 mi) of existing two-lane road and the construction of a 1.4 km (.87 mi) extension of the road on new location. The area of potential effect for the existing length of road is 6 m (20 ft) on either side of the road, and for the new location section is an area 91 m (300 ft) wide, although the proposed road will actually be much narrower. Archival research revealed that no archeological sites had been recorded in or near the project area, but that several 50 year old houses adjoined or were within the project area. Our survey recorded three sites, one a sparse prehistoric lithic scatter, one a destroyed late nineteenth to early twentieth century house site and one (9DA153) a standing nineteenth century house site. The first two are clearly not eligible for listing in the National Register, but the third is potentially eligible on archeological grounds (criterion d). This latter site has been recommended as eligible on architectural criteria and will be avoided by the proposed roadway extension. With the avoidance of site 9DA153, no significant cultural resources will be affected by the proposed undertaking. If 9DA 153 cannot be avoided, the archeological component of it will need to be archeologically evaluated to firmly determine its eligibility status.
