On March 22, 2007, TRC conducted an archaeological survey of a 10-acre tract in Heard County, Georgia. The tract is the proposed site of an expansion to the Franklin wastewater treatment facility, which is located about 0.75 miles (1.25 km) southwest of downtown Franklin along the east shore of the Chattahoochee River. A previously recorded prehistoric site is outside the project area. Another site was recorded at the location of the existing treatment facility before the facility was constructed. The project tract was surveyed using standard shovel testing methods with particular attention paid to the area near the sites as well as two ridge top areas within the project tract. As a result of the current archaeological investigations, artifacts probably associated with both sites were recovered in the northwestern portion of the project tract, near the site of the present wastewater treatment facility and access road. Due to the proximity of these artifacts to both sites, and the similarity of the assemblages, these sites may be related. Because the area is deflated and destroyed by construction activities associated with the existing treatment plant, the new finds do not change the original recommendation of NRHP ineligibility for either site, and no further archaeological work is recommended on this resource.
