Abstract

The Office of Campus Planning at the University of Georgia has proposed to build a bicycle trail from Riverbend Research Center to River Road. This trail will run along the floodplain of the west bank of the North Oconee River. The area of effect is approximately 7500 feet long, 30 feet wide, and 3 feet deep (see Map 1). This report details the results of the archaeological survey of the proposed bicycle trail. This survey was conducted by Gina Matthiesen, a graduate student in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Georgia, under the direction of Dr. David Hally, an archaeologist in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Georgia. Gina Matthiesen was assisted in the field by Greg Keyes, also a graduate Student in Anthropology at the University of Georgia. In this project, a site will be defined as the presence of five or more pre-1930's artifacts from any single subsurface context, any two or more contiguous subsurface excavations, any combination of subsurface and surface artifact occurrences within a 120 foot radius, and any surface context within a 120 foot radius.
