Abstract

This report presents the results of an intensive archeological survey performed by Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc. in southeastern Peach County, where the Georgia Transmission Corporation wishes to construct the proposed Aultman Road 115/12 kV Substation. The goal of the survey was to locate and evaluate any archeological resources that may be adversely affected by the construction of the substation. The survey was undertaken in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. The area of potential effect for the project consists of an approximately 2.2 ha (5.5 ac) tract that is entirely composed of pasture, about a third of which is underneath an existing transmission line. It has no ground surface exposure and is located on a broad, level ridge top. Archival research showed no known archeological sites or house sites in or near the project area. The project area was examined with a 30 m grid of 27 shovel tested to locate evidence of archeological sites. One test yielded a single chert flake fragment in the plowzone, and this was considered an isolated find. Thus, no sites were encountered in the project area. We conclude that the construction of the proposed substation will have no adverse effects to significant archeological resources and should be granted clearance to proceed.
