Abstract

A Phase I cultural resources survey was conducted of the proposed Walnut Creek Water Reclamation Facility and Holding Pond in Henry County, Georgia to locate, identify, and assess the significance of cultural resources within the project area of potential effects. The project area covers approximately 581 acres and is located along Walnut Creeks approximately 12.9 kilometers east-northeast of McDonough, Georgia. A total of 26 archeological sites, five isolated fords, and three historic structure resources were recorded. One previously recorded site was revisited. Occupations dating to the Early, Middle, .and Late Archaic; Woodland; Middle Woodland; Woodland/Mississippian, unknown prehistoric, and middle 19' to middle 20`n century were identified. All of the archeological sites and isolated finds are considered ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places. All three historic structures are early 20`h century residences/farmsteads. HS-1 and HS-3 are recommended ineligible for the NRHP. HS-2 is recommended eligible for the NRHP. Existing vegetation provides a visual buffer between the project area and HS-2; if this buffer is maintained, the proposed undertaking will pose no adverse effect to HS-2.
