Abstract

Shovel testing and surface reconnaissance were utilized to archaeologically survey the proposed location of the Canton Cherokee County Business and Industrial Park. One prehistoric site, roughly 250 X 150 meters, was discovered in the terrace portion of the impact area. The materials recovered indicate that the site probably is an Early or Middle Woodland village site. The site is considered potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. A testing program, consisting of controlled surface collection and the excavation of twelve 2 X 2 meter units, is recommended.
