Abstract

The proposed project would replace the narrow and structurally deficient bridge on SR 101 over the Etowah River in Floyd County. The proposed pro3ec on SR would begin approximately 220 meters (721 feet) southeast of East Eighth Street then continue northwesterly to an end point approximately 220 meters (721 feet) northwest of the Glen Milnar Boulevard/First Avenue intersection. Also, Riverbend Boulevard will be realigned approximately 61 meters (200 feet) west of its existing location to tie in with East Sixth Street at the SR 101 intersection. The existing right-of-way on SR 101 is approximately 36.5 meters (120 feet), while the proposed additional required right-of-way will be a maximum of approximately 61 meters (200 feet). An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed rights-of-way was conducted for the entire .79 kilometer (.49 mile) project corridor. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register archaeological resources were located acted within the project's area of potential environmental effect. it is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above".
