Abstract

This report covers Phase II testing of a small brick making site found in a 1978 survey prior to a proposed land exchange in eastern Habersham County, on the Chattahoochee National Forest. Test excavations into two small pit kilns, a spoil pile, and a nearby clay resource pit showed that the site had been intensively salvaged for usable bricks, and the firing pits partly filled by brick trash and slope wash. This clearing and salvage removed or disturbed the site to the point where it would not meet the 36 CFR 60 criteria for nomination to the National Register. Its disturbed condition made further investigation at the site unlikely to produce useful additional data on the production or use of brick in the area.
