Abstract

On March, 2, 2009, Edwards-Pitman Environmental, Inc. (EPEI) conducted an archaeological survey of the proposed Jones Bridge Road at Waters Road intersection improvements project in. the City of Johns Creek, in north Fulton County, Georgia. The goal of the survey was to locate and evaluate archaeological sites within the Area of Potential Effect (APE) of the proposed undertaking, so that potential effects to archaeological resources could be evaluated in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The project was conducted for the City of Johns Creek under a contract with Wolverton & Associates, Inc. A review of the Georgia Archaeological Site File showed five previously recorded sites within a one kilometer (km) radius of the APE. Four of the sites are outside the APE. The proposed project would have no effect on these four sites. During the course of the current investigation, two archaeological sites, previously recorded Site 9FU302 and Site 9FU558, were encountered. Site 9FU302 is the location of one or more historic structures, probably outbuildings, dating to the twentieth century. Site 9FU558 is a rectangular concrete pad representing the floor slab of a demolished house. The portions of these sites investigated within the project APE are highly disturbed, and would not produce additional significant archaeological data with further investigations. Site 9FU302 was previously determined ineligible for the NRHP, and we agree with this determination based on our field investigations. The NRHP eligibility recommendation for 9FU558 is unknown. The area of this site within the APE would not contribute to NRHP eligibility of this site. Our survey indicated that further archaeological investigations within the APE at this site would probably not result in the recovery of additional significant archaeological data. Therefore, no further archaeological work is recommended within the APE of the Jones Bridge Road at Waters Road intersection improvements project. Archaeological clearance to proceed with this project as currently designed is recommended.
