Abstract

A cultural resources survey was conducted by the author in February, 2003, of al 16-acre isolated tract of National Forest lands in Gilmer County, Georgia, prior to a proposed land exchange with Mr. Dallas Gay of Gainesville, Georgia. The land is located on and just south of the Blue Ridge Divide, near the community of Pisgah, and incorporates ridges and a small stream drainage from that Divide. It is completely surrounded by Mr. Gay's property, parts of which are in Conservation Easements. One of his purposes for acquiring the land is to prevent development within his holdings. The pedestrian survey included screened shovel tests in level or near-level locations within the parcel, and visual examination of the rest. Most of the land was very steep, and there were no indications of prior occupation or other cultural activities on it, either historic or prehistoric, beyond old road beds and possible farm fields. While it was clear that much of the area had been logged at some time in the past, reforestation has covered most of the land in the past 60 years. Since there were no cultural remains found on this parcel, there should be no effect on the cultural resources of this area by the proposed land exchange.
