Abstract

The proposed project would consist of intersection improvements on SR 242 at CR 210/Waco Mill Road and CS 659/Hospital Road in the City of Sandersville. The total project length would be approximately 0.91 mile. The existing right-of-way along SR 242 varies from 80 feet to 100 feet. The existing right-ofway along CR 210/Waco Mill Road is 60 feet. The existing right-of-way along CS 659/Hospital Road is 80 feet. The proposed typical section for SR 242 would be one 12-foot travel lane in each direction with 12foot left turn lanes at the new intersections of CR 210/Waco Mill Road and CS 659/Hospital Road. Auxiliary lanes would also be added for right turning traffic at both locations. Additional right-of-way strip tracts would be required in widths varying from 15 feet to 30 feet. County Road 210/Waco Mill Road would become a "right-in/right-out" roadway that eliminates left turn movements onto SR 242 west. A connector road (Waco Mill Connector) would be constructed approximately 1360 feet west of the existing intersection and would connect SR 242 to CR 374/Industrial Drive. County Road 210/Waco Mill Road traffic could then use the connector to access SR 242 west. Additional right-of-way for the construction of the Waco Mill Connector would vary in width from 80 feet to 120 feet. A connector road (Ridge Road Connector) would be constructed from CS 659/Hospital Road to CR 69/Ridge Road. The connector roadway would be approximately 2366 feet long. CS 659 traffic could then use the connector to access SR 242 east. The proposed typical section of the connector roadway is one 12-foot travel lane in each direction with 8-foot rural shoulders. Auxiliary lanes would be provided as needed. Additional right-of-way for the construction of the Ridge Road Connector would vary in width from 80 feet to 100 feet. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
