Abstract

In May 1998, Brockington and Associates, Inc. conducted limited cultural resource investigations of the Phase 1 Classroom Building location, on the campus of Augusta State University (ASU). These investigations were conducted to determine the potential for significant cultural resources within the study area. This study also recommends procedures necessary for the project to meet Georgia Environmental Policy (GEPA) requirements. The scope of this project was defined by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia: Conduct basic archaeological investigation of the Site indicated on the attached map and located on the campus of ASU. Conduct archival research to identify any significant archaeological or historical details that may be documented. Conduct a field investigation of the Site, including "backhoe reconnaissance" in several areas across the Site. This will include surface scraping of both paved and unpaved areas where potentially significant archaeological deposits exist. Evaluate the potential impact of the proposed project, in accordance with GEPA requirements, on historical structures located adjacent to the project Site. The archival research identified a number of significant events which occurred within the study area. The archaeological reconnaissance showed that significant subsurface deposits are present within the defined project area. The investigation revealed that the project may cause adverse effects on historic buildings in the vicinity. Specific management recommendations are presented. These procedures are necessary for the proposed project to meet current GEPA cultural resource requirements.
